The latest cruise ship to get into trouble in the waters of Antarctica was Quark Expeditions’ small Ocean Nova, which ran aground last week in high winds one mile from the Argentine research base at San Martin, carrying 104 passengers and crew.
The 1992-built ice-class vessel was later successfully refloated and all passengers transferred to another small expedition cruise ship which offered assistance, Clipper Adventure. Also assisting Ocean Nova was the Spanish government research vessel Hesperides, whose divers reported no underwater damage to the vessel, or oil leakage.
