UN Food Barges Attacked in Southern Sudan

This past Friday, 27 barges carrying UN food aid up Sudan's Sobat tributary, part of the White Nile river system, came under attack by gunmen from the Jikany Nuer ethnic group. Reuters reports that officials said at least 40 south Sudanese soldiers and civilians, including women and children, were killed in the gunfight.

According to the UN World Food Program, some of the boats are unaccounted for and none of the food aid reached its destination of Akobo.
